As we age, you’re enjoying hard-won wisdom and balance across your career, family, friends, and more. And you've likely found what works for your body and lifestyle, as far as your health, hair, skin, and makeup goes. While you may notice some changes in your hair color and texture, your skin may be undergoing a more noticeable transition.

Finding the best skincare products to support your aging skin may feel daunting. Let’s take a look at how aging can change your skin and what foundation best supports those changes.

How Does Skin Change As We Age?

As you get older, your skin goes through some transformations that may be evident in your appearance. Let’s discuss some of the changes you may have already started to experience.

Dryness

You may notice that you are reaching for your moisturizer more often than you used to. (Reminder that no matter your age, daily moisturizing is important.) Even if you have depended on the same tried-and-true moisturizer for years, you may be looking for thicker formulas to help with an increased need for hydration.

This is normal, as our skin’s natural production of collagen and hyaluronic acid starts to slow. Less water is kept in the skin’s layers, so our skin becomes more prone to dryness. And environmental factors like weather or using hot water can also contribute to feelings of tightness, flakiness, and other uncomfortable symptoms that accompany excessive dryness.

Purposefully choosing a moisturizer that helps with hydration will be your best bet as you work on obtaining a more hydrated complexion. Our Miracle Cream is ideal for super-dry skin types as it delivers intense and nourishing moisture. Once you consistently incorporate it into your skincare routine, your skin will likely experience less irritation that comes from dryness, and your makeup will sit better on your face when it has a hydrated canvas to build on.

If you are combating extra dry skin, the Oil Stick is hydration in a solid, portable form. Its quartet of fast-absorbing, high-performance oils—apricot, jojoba, rosehip and sunflower—easily glides over your face and makes your skin look luminous and hydrated. You can apply it all over your face or just in super dry areas.

Texture

Rougher skin may develop as we age. Cell turnover is starting to slow down, which can cause a buildup of dead skin cells and makes our skin feel less smooth. Regular exfoliation—physical or chemical—will help with removing the layers of dead skin cells. However you decide to exfoliate will depend on your skin type and on your skin sensitivity.

Like cell turnover, collagen production also slows as you get older. This can lead to skin becoming less elastic, and fine lines and wrinkles form. Like dryness, this change in texture is natural and occurs in everyone.

If you spent a lot of time in the sun when you were younger, you might see the effects of excessive sun exposure now. Sun exposure can cause uneven skin texture as it can affect your skin’s underlying connective tissues

With treatment, some of these changes are reversible and manageable with the help of a board-certified dermatologist. But your best course of action is preventative care: sunscreen every day.

Tone

You may have noticed some areas of skin that have become darker in tone. Age spots are common, especially for those who have had a lot of sun exposure. UV light speeds up our pigment cells, which causes our skin tone to become darker. As we age, these areas of the skin may overproduce that pigment, and it will appear as an age spot (sometimes called a sunspot).

Hormones can also be to blame when it comes to changes in tone. Melasma is caused by hormones in pregnant women, which can cause a change in skin tone on the face. But melasma can last after the pregnancy has ended, taking years or even a lifetime to fade away.

As skin ages, it does become thinner and more easily scratched or scraped, and wounds take longer to heal. Aging skin may be more prone to scarring, so take care to avoid picking or peeling when your skin is healing to avoid hyperpigmentation.

What Is the Best Foundation for Mature Skin?

Your makeup should help with enhancing your best features as well as covering any skin concerns you’re experiencing as you age. With changes to your skin, though, overhauling your makeup routine may be necessary to ensure you have the right products that will target your new concerns.

If your current makeup products—foundation and concealer specifically—aren’t formulated for your specific skin type, you may be unintentionally highlighting or exacerbating the areas you are trying to cover up. With all the skin changes you may be experiencing with age, it’s important to choose makeup that works for you, and not against you. This means looking at formulations and choosing hydrating options that seamlessly blend into your complexion rather than making your skin look cakey

Start asking yourself questions about what has historically worked for you, like: Do you normally wear a matte-finish liquid foundation or would a serum foundation be a better option? Do you like buildable coverage for a natural look or do you prefer a light, glowy look every day? Do you still need oil-free products for oily skin? Once you get the answers, you’ll start seeing areas where you can make small, or even larger, tweaks.

Jones Road has you covered. Our What The Foundation is an excellent foundation for aging skin. It’s a hydrating tinted moisturizer meets a traditional foundation—suitable for sensitive skin—that blends seamlessly into the skin so your complexion looks like your skin on its best day. Your skin needs hydration, and it will get that plus a dewy finish thanks to the jojoba oil and sodium hyaluronate. It’s offered in 12 shades (find your best match here), and we recommend keeping a couple of shades on hand for the winter months when your skin may be a bit paler and summer when your face will likely be exposed to more sun.

This moisturizing foundation will glide seamlessly onto your skin, leaving you with an even and fresh complexion. No worries about your foundation creasing into fine lines or being left with a chalky or drier look like you’ll find with matte foundations or powder foundations. While your first pass will give you light to medium coverage, it is easily buildable to your desired full coverage foundation. WTF will leave you with a long-lasting radiant finish.

Concealer

If you have a few spots that require extra coverage, The Face Pencil covers redness and brightens the appearance of dark spots with ease.

With 25 shades to choose from, you don’t have to worry about making sure there is a shade that will suit your skin tone. We recommend peach tones to neutralize any discoloration or dark circles, and pick two to three shades as your skin color may vary from your forehead to your cheeks. It may be a little tough to try to pick out a shade of concealer on your screen, but our shade finder quiz will help you figure out which colors will best suit your skin type and tone.

Luminosity and Color

After concealer and foundation, you may want to apply a little color. Our Miracle Balm adds a soft wash of moisturized color that enhances your natural tone. With nine shades, you’ll have plenty of options to leave you radiant and glowing.

Looking for something bolder? Our Lip and Cheek Stick glides effortlessly across your skin; layer as you like to impart more glow.
