Bobbi Brown's Tips for Prom Season

It’s officially prom season, but don’t let getting ready for this special even stress you out. With a little planning, you can put together a look that will have you looking and feeling your best. Here are some of my tips for making your prom a night to remember.

STYLE: DRESS

Give yourself a few months to find your dress. If you’re on a budget, consider options like Rent the Runway or (better yet)your sister or cousin’s closet. If you’re borrowing a dress, be creative and make it your own. Most important: your dress should be comfortable. A super tight dress can be hard to walk in and after one bite of pizza, will be too uncomfortable for the night. I am a big fan of slip dresses. They are so simple and can be worn again. When it comes to color, select something that fits your mood. Make sure you have the right undergarments. Smooth lines work best. And don’t forget a wrap or cropped sweater.

STYLE: ACCESSORIES

Jewels are all you. There are so many affordable options, from Walmart to Target to your grandma’s jewelry drawer. Nothing is prettier than sparkles in your ears. Look for little rhinestone drops, bigger chandelier earrings or oversized hoops.

Use a small clutch to carry the essentials: mints, your lipstick or gloss and a small mirror.

STYLE: SHOES

Make sure they are comfy! If you’ve never worn super high heels, don’t start now. Nothing worse than having your hurting feet take over your night. I always suggest a pair of pretty ballet slippers that you can fold and keep in your hand bag.

BEAUTY: Hair & Nails

I personally love a sleek straight blow out. A messy bun or ponytail is also really pretty. If your able to go to a salon or blow out bar make the appointment ASAP — they will fill up fast this time of year. When it comes to your nails, anything goes. Paint them yourself or get a manicure the day before. Have fun and go crazy or keep them clean.

BEAUTY: MAKEUP INSPIRATION

Start by looking for inspiration — save your favorite photos from magazines or on Instagram. Then, decide if you want to work with a makeup artist or do the makeup yourself. If you book an artist, make sure you do a trial first. Always speak up if you don’t like something and take photos to see how it all looks. Photographs are a big part of any special event, so you want to see how the makeup looks on camera. If you’re doing it yourself or with a friend, set aside time to practice.

The biggest thing is to keep your look pretty and fun, with a touch of glamour. Don’t try to take it too far. A black smokey eye, for example, is tough to pull off, especially when most pre-prom parties take place in the late afternoon. You also don’t want a look that is going to easily smear. Some looks, like glossy lids, are better left on the runway.

If you’re going to do your own makeup give yourself plenty of time to get ready. The last thing you want is to feel rushed. Here are some basic beauty rules to follow:

  1. Use a moisturizer that works with the texture of your skin. If you have oily skin, use a moisturizer with a matte finish. If your skin is dry, you might want to use a heavier moisturizer that will keep you hydrated while allowing your makeup to go on smoothly.

  2. Use concealer to lighten any dark spots. It should be lighter than your foundation, but not too white. A peachy tone is perfect for covering dark purple circles.

  3. Foundation is not necessary, but if you want to wear it, make it really natural. It should match the color of your skin and blend seamlessly. Also, make sure your face and body are the same color. Use bronzer if you need to even things out.

  4. Use a soft blush (one that matches the color of your cheeks when they naturally flush) and some highlighter instead of going for a full contour. You’ll have a natural looking glow.

  5. Brush eyebrows up and add a product, like Glossier Boy Brow, to keep them defined and natural looking.

  6. Eye shadow is optional, but if you wear it, keep it light. A bit of shimmer or glow is my favorite look. You can use medium-toned shadow to add depth to the lid. Get a little playful if that is your jam — try a purple or blue, but avoid red!

  7. Eyeliner makes a huge difference here. A cat eye, a thin, tight line or a subtle smokey eye are all great options. Use waterproof mascara in black or try false lashes if you’re really into makeup.

  8. Lips that don’t require constant touch ups and checking are the best. Use a fuss-free gloss or a lighter lip color, but avoid anything super pale that can make you look washed out.

  9. Don’t forget to use body cream or body oil to keep skin hydrated. I love adding a little sparkle here too.

Most importantly, have fun!
