Where to Eat: Detroit

Detroit is one of the most exciting places to eat right now in the US. Chefs, artists and entrepreneurs are flocking to the city to be a part of its revival and showcase their craft. For travelers, this means creative food at prices that won’t break the bank, all served up with plenty of enthusiasm and local pride. Here’s a look at where to eat in the Big D:
Kick off your day tucking into buckwheat pancakes served with cultured butter and Michigan maple syrup at Rose’s Fine Food, an out of the way diner that’s worth the Uber ride. Another diner option is Parks and Rec, where the folding green chairs came from the (you guessed it) city’s parks and recreation department. Order the Turkish eggs, served with tabbouleh and vegan flatbread or for a smaller bite, try the Coco-Yo Parfait, a housemade coconut yogurt parfait. If you’re craving veggies, head to Selden Standard, an industrial looking farm to table restaurant near the Shinola flagship store. The vegetable carpaccio is an Instagram worthy salad with delicate ribbons of beets. Need something heartier? Warm up with squid fried rice topped with kimchi. Detroit Vegan Soul is one of the city’s best known vegan spots, and recently opened a new location on the city’s west side. The soul platter offers a little bit of everything; smoked collard greens, maple glazed yams and black eye peas over rice.
For Thai food served in a futuristic setting, swing by Takoi. Sip a spirulina based cocktail and share the family style dishes of seared scallops in coconut juice or whole branzino served with bibb lettuce cups. For a true feast, book the chef’s table experience at The Apparatus Room inside the new Detroit Foundation Hotel. Michelin-starred chef Thomas Lents sends out 8-12 seasonal courses with wine pairings. Or just grab a booth in the main restaurant and enjoy harissa spiced carrot salad or a braised farm chicken served with Tuscan kale and pumpkin masala. Craving a sweet treat? Pop by Detroit Water Ice, which serves dairy free desserts similar to Italian ice. Flavors include Motown Mint & The Chips, and Cherry Corvette. Added bonus- the shop was opened by author Mitch Albom and 100% of the proceeds support a local charity.
