Stylist Julia Von Boehm's Wardrobe Must-Haves

Written by: Alexandra Perron, Managing Editor

Stylist Julia Von Boehm has worked with some of the biggest names in fashion. She started her career as an editor at French Vogue, working with iconic editor-in-chief Carine Roitfeld and went on to become Nicole Kidman’s stylist for all of her red carpet events. (The gorgeous blue Armani Privé dress at the Oscars? That was Julia). Today, she’s back in the magazine world as the Fashion Director at InStyle, working with everyone from Michelle Pfieffer to Taraji P. Henson, and is busy running her new lifestyle website. We asked her to share her inspirations, wardrobe must-haves and the best advice she’s ever received.

Your Big Break:

My first big fashion break came at French Vogue in editorial as an editor. My second big break was when I started styling Nicole Kidman.

Currently Working On:

I am very happy to have started a new chapter in my life by taking on the role of Fashion Director at InStyle magazine after having been a freelancer for 18 years. Another very new "baby" is my lifestyle website. It has been such an exciting project to work on— very different from everything I’ve done in the past. It almost feels like curating my own small digital magazine. I see a lot, I hear a lot, I experience a lot on all my travels. I’m finally ready to share it with everyone on the website.

Style Inspiration:

I’m inspired by life, whether that’s looking within myself, at books, or drawing from the past. It’s honing in on the small details that escape us and making them into a bigger picture.

Describe Your Personal Style in 3 Words:

Masculine, feminine, timeless.

Most Iconic Red Carpet Moment:

The moment Nicole Kidman stepped in the red carpet wearing a cobalt blue Armani gown [at the 2018 Oscars]. I knew it was a bold move and I love bold moves!

Your 5 Wardrobe Must-Haves:

Your InStyle Uniform:

Anything black, in whatever shape and style I’m feeling inspired by at the moment.

Product Obsessions:

The Cream from Augustinus Bader, Re/Done for jeans and t-shirts and the Sonicare Diamond Toothbrush.

Wellness & Beauty Philosophy:

To know what you are doing. For yourself, know what you're doing and why. Do your research before you commit to something because everyone else is doing it, whether its beauty-related or wellness. I stick to what I know works for me.

Work Mantra:

Oh my! Haha! This is a tough one as I am a bit of a perfectionist. My work mantra is to set high expectations for yourself and never settle at mediocre. Be adaptable to change, stay modern yet true to yourself.

Best Advice You’ve Ever Received:

If you want to get things done, look for a busy person!

Advice for those looking to get into the fashion industry:

Work hard and find the right mentor for yourself. Once you nail that, then work even harder!
