Danny Seo, my great friend and visionary, offers us tips each week on how we can all live our best lives, Naturally.

Stock a Smarter Pantry

Stock your pantry more efficiently in 2018 by knowing how to get the most out of special deals and discounts. If an organic shelf-stable item that you use on a regular basis is on sale, buy about 12 weeks’ worth of product. This is the average length of time between sales cycles for most items found in a supermarket. So, if you eat one jar of organic pasta sauce a week on average, buy 12 jars. Shelf-stable items are your best bets to save big on organics when they’re on sale.

Book a Greener Seat

When choosing flights for travel, there are a few things you can do to minimize your environmental impact. One thing is to choose nonstop flights; multiple flights with connections or layovers contribute more air pollution. But here’s one you may not have heard of: Avoid red-eye or nighttime flights. The pollution emitted from planes at night has a more detrimental impact on the environment. Scientists have found that CO2 emissions at night aren’t offset by their “tendency to reflect incoming sunlight,” so they are basically twice as bad for the atmosphere.

Revive Rusty Bakeware

Bakeware can take a beating during the holidays. If you notice rust has formed on muffin tins and cookie sheets don’t replace them, revive them. It’s easy to remove rust and save your cookware by using things you already have. Just cut a raw potato in half and dip it in dish soap. Then use the cut end to scrub the rust off your bakeware. You can also add some baking soda for grit; just keep rubbing until the rust lifts up. The combination of starch from the potato, degreaser from the soap and grit from the baking soda does wonders to bring back its original shine.

Donate Tech to a Good Cause

January is an ideal time to purge your home of things your family no longer uses. Clothes are easy to donate, but things like video games and consoles can feel trickier. Fortunately, there’s a thoughtful foundation that wants them. Gamers Outreach Foundation (GOF) is a nonprofit that accepts lightly used video games and equipment for children’s wards in hospitals. Since 2009, GOF has been helping kids who are isolated and alone in hospitals find entertainment and joy with video games. Their “GO Kart” system even allows nurses to transport video games and equipment to children who are unable to leave their rooms in the hospital. To donate and learn more, visit gamersoutreach.org

Welcome Wildlife in Winter

Now that it’s winter, your backyard may look desolate, but there are tiny ways you can make it a haven for wildlife during the colder months. The simplest way is to build something called a brush pile; just layer large fallen tree limbs, branches, grass clippings and leaves together. It becomes a safe spot to nest for small animals and amphibians. And even stacking firewood in a crisscross fashion can help; the design creates internal spaces that offer relief from the cold for animals.
