Holiday Beauty: How to Master the Classic Red Lip

Not everyone looks good in a bold red lip. And if you are always searching and never finding one perhaps you’re one of those people, like me or Jennifer Aniston. But if you do look good, go for it. It can be both elegant and hip at the same time. How you fit it in with your personal style can be make or break — I actually love the combo of a white top, minimal makeup, and a bold red lips (think Grace Kelly or Angelina Jolie).
What’s new for today is the application and look of ease — there is no lip liner or gloss. I am a fan of a true matte finish for long-lasting wear, but make sure the formula isn’t too dry or it will noticeably dry out lips. Apply with a brush and blot! Always check to make sure you have filled in to the inner corner of the mouth and to the end of the lips with out over lining.
To pick the best colors here are some tips: On very pale skin, choose a bright pink or blue-red; for warmer skin tones, try an orange-red; deep skin tones look great in a browner red. Don’t be afraid to mix your own shade, using two or more of your favorite colors.
The rest of the makeup has to be effortless — that means concealer and foundation that looks bare. Same with powder. Add a hint of of pink or coral blush, really black mascara and a touch of peach or nude shadow. Add a thin black liner to the top lash line only. Let the statement be about the strong red lip.
