Billie to the Rescue

Written by: Christina Valhouli

If you’re like most women who shave, you probably get annoyed every time you have to buy pricey razors. And what makes it worse is that nearly identical blades for men cost less. Welcome to the so-called Pink Tax, where products for women have a bigger mark up than the equivalent for men. This where Billie comes to the rescue.

Billie is a new, direct-to-consumer business for women's razors, launched by Georgina Gooley and Jason Bravman. The concept is similar to Dollar Shave Club or Harry’s, but this is the first shaving club that is designed just for women.

The difference goes beyond just the cost- although Billie’s prices are about half of what you’d spend in a drugstore. Billie’s razors are designed for women, who typically shave more frequently (and cover more surface area) then men. The packaging is clean and colorful without being too cute, and it is already making waves on Instagram.

The design is also geared for women’s bodies. The blades have rounded edges to work in smaller areas such as armpits, and there is extra space between the five blades to prevent clogging from hair and soap. For extra moisture, the blades are wrapped in aloe soap.

Billie goes beyond just razors, offering a full kit of shaving accessories, such as Shave Cream ($8) made with aloe, sage and shea butter, and a creamy Sudsy Body Wash ($9) containing grapefruit and coconut. The Body Wash is thick enough to double as a shave cream in a pinch. Post shave, the Dry-Bye Body Lotion ($12) keeps you hydrated all day thanks to chamomile, shea butter and grape seed. The products are all paraben free and do not contain synthetic fragrances.

The $9 Starter Kit includes an ergonomic handle in a choice of four colors, a magnetic razor holder, and two five-blade razor cartridges. A set of four replacement cartridges is $9. Customers can select a refill frequency based on their preference, such as every 1, 2 or 3 months.

Billie is far more fun—and far less money—than what you’d pay in a big box drugstore which means you can enjoy your smooth legs, and kiss that pink tax goodbye.
