Two Nutritionists Share Their Personal Alcohol Strategies

Written by: Carolyn Brown and Lauren Slayton

First, we want to responsibly state that the best amount of alcohol to drink is none at all. As we've said before, alcohol is a toxin, even if it's our favorite toxin. So yes, we drink. But we also like to feel good. One of our latest Foodtrainers' podcast episodes, "Alcohol 101: Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy", goes into depth on the all things alcohol. We thought we’d give you a preview of our own personal boozy strategies.Keep in mind, these are our strategies, developed after a fair amount of trial and error. The key, with any behavior, is to find the winning formula for you.

Lauren’s Strategy

  1. I try to limit or skip drinks early in the week. This system of a dry start to the week works well for me.

  2. I’m also someone who can be one and done. On the nights I drink, one drink works well. I can savor my single bebida and get a little buzz. I realize this isn’t the strategy for everyone.

  3. In terms of what I drink, I’ve been told I’m an alcohol snob (not a snob, just a snob with food and drink). I also love rosé. I’ve known Carolyn for 8 years and just found out she doesn’t adore rosé, whaaat?

  4. And finally, we’re both fans of foods or “secret weapons” that improve liver health. I’m a big matcha girl — shake it up with ice, stevia and lime in warmer months. Matcha, a powdered green tea, is good for your liver and also a metabolism booster. And dandelion is a staple in my summer routine. These dandelion bitters will be back in stock this week.

Carolyn’s Strategy:

  1. Unlike Lauren, I’m here to represent the not-always-one-and-done crowd. Everyone is different. I use a Foodtrainers’ hack we call “name your number.” Before going out, I decide how many drinks I’ll have ahead of time (2-3 max) and map out my week of drinks.

  2. Another habit I’ve developed is going one for one. I have one glass for water or sparkling water for every drink.

  3. As Lauren said, I’m not fully on the rosé train (I mean I'll drink it, but...), I’m white wine all the way and I steer toward dry whites. Dry is synonymous with lower sugar. New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs are my favorite, as all New Zealand wines are biodynamic. It’s complicated to explain biodynamic but just know it’s good. On the podcast, learn why we’re not recommending California wines right now.

  4. My liver-living secret weapon? I have two. I always eat something with good fat before drinking, like olives, nuts, or avocado. This slows the release of booze into my system. And our Everything Pills, which are NAC, minimize the harmful effects of alcohol and help you clear it from your body sooner.
