4 Simple Tips for a Fresh Start to 2021
Written by: Danielle Diamond
No matter how many years we are into a wellness journey, sometimes we all need a little jumpstart to get back on track. For me it's usually after my birthday celebration, which tends to last about a week and then the time between Thanksgiving and New Year's when we barely know what day it is, let alone how many cookies we’ve eaten. (It’s all good, celebrations are meant to be enjoyed, and not punishable at a later date.)
Thankfully, I’ve learned that extreme exercising and dieting are a first class ticket to a messed up metabolism and extreme unhappiness. None of us want either of those in 2021 so I've taken everything I've learned from being in the wellness world for the last 20 years and put it into a free 5-day Jumpstart program that you can join here, and grab a few tips from below.
These quick and easy practices will not only help you make every day great, but also bring a much needed fresh start to 2021:
Practice Gratitude
My favorite way to start the day out right is by finding three things to be thankful for each morning before your feet hit the ground. This one thing can actually change your life — research shows that those who do are more optimistic, have more social connections, sleep more soundly, exercise more and are happier. They’re also less likely to be depressed, envious and greedy. Practicing gratitude is a no-brainer!
Quit Skipping Breakfast
You may think skipping breakfast will save you time and calories later in the day, but unfortunately it does just the opposite. Studies show that eating breakfast actually reduces hunger later in the day, and gives you more energy and brain power to get through your to-do list. And it can be as simple as a smoothie.
Move it
Most of us are chained to our computers and sit for hours on end each day, which studies show can lead not only to obesity, but also depression, neck and back problems, and even a shorter life span. The good news? Researches at the University of Bristol found that employees performed significantly better in areas of productivity, energy and focus on days that they exercised.
The number one thing I hear from my clients is that they don’t exercise because they don't have enough time, but trust me, you do. Ten minutes is all you need as you can see from the video below. Just 10 minutes of multitasking moves will get you sculpted and boost your heart rate quickly. This is why I kept all the videos in my jumpstart to just 10 minutes - commit to yourself and don’t negotiate it.
Get a Good Night of Sleep
A restful sleep tonight sets the stage for increased energy and productivity tomorrow. Studies have shown that decreased sleep time leads to a drop in physical and mental energy. Go for a full eight hours if you want to nail that presentation or stay awake for your kid’s afternoon soccer match.
If you’ve been feeling “off” and can’t figure out why, vow to implement a few of these tips into your daily routine and I promise you’ll feel better in your skin and find more focus, energy and happiness in each day!
