TyLynn Nguyen was born in Columbia, South Carolina to a drill sergeant mother and a banker father. She graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a bachelors degree in textile marketing and design. Here she found her love of lingerie through talking with a professor about the importance of inner beauty and what it means to care and love for yourself. TyLynn Nguyen is based in Calabasas, CA where she resides with her husband, Bee Nguyen, and their three beautiful children. Here she talks about her time in the fashion industry, running a business and her beauty obsessions.
BIG BREAK, HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY?
I was scouted by Bruce Weber’s team to shoot for Abercrombie and Fitch. I was 17, so I shot for Hollister Co. and then decided to go to college for fashion design. I graduated then moved to LA to pursue my love, my husband. I got back into modeling and started my line when I was pregnant with my second child.
DID YOU ALWAYS KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE A DESIGNER?
Yes! I’ve been telling people I would have my own line since I was 12 years old.
WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST FEAR WHEN GOING OUT AND STARTING YOUR OWN LINE?
That it would fail and no one would like it. But I realized after starting the line that there are highs and lows to working for yourself and the more people hear about your brand the more people keep buying your brand. Quality reigns supreme. I believe if you have a great, well-made product, it will be loved and adored by your clientele who will keep buying it for years to come.
DESCRIBE THE TYLYNN NGUYEN WOMAN:
She is regal in nature; drawn to classic silhouettes. She is highly in tune with her sexuality. She is a woman of substance; carrying many roles with ease while caring for her inner and outer being.
HOW DO YOU WANT WOMEN TO FEEL WHEN WEARING YOUR CLOTHES?
I want women to feel powerful and complete. We are made up of all the ingredients we need to thrive so adding my pieces to your wardrobe is just a small reminder of how perfect you already are.
YOUR STYLE PHILOSOPHY:
Classics reign supreme.
WHAT ROLE DO YOU THINK SOCIAL MEDIA PLAYS IN FASHION TODAY?
It plays a huge part. It is stepping into the world of the brand. For myself I share my life in its whole. I want women to see that you can have a family, a business, be sexy, enjoy the world, have children, and still be mentally/physically complete.
CURRENTLY WORKING ON:
Oh man…a lot, but what I can share is that I have another collection launching in the fall (September/early October).
YOUR MANTRA:
Grateful for everything.
IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU FUEL YOUR BODY AS A MOTHER, WIFE AND BUSINESSWOMAN?
I fuel my body with food!! In order to do it all you need to eat a lot of food! Fruits, vegetables, proteins, and water are my source!
YOUR BEAUTY OBSESSIONS:
African Botanics body lotion, Chanel face crème, True Botanicals Renew Face Oil, and the La Prairie sleep mask.
IF YOU COULD GO BACK AND TELL YOURSELF ONE THING BEFORE BEGINNING YOUR CAREER WHAT WOULD IT BE?
You’re amazing, you’re going to succeed, and anyone who makes you feel less than needs a hug.
THERE’S SO MUCH PRESSURE FOR DESIGNERS TO COME OUT WITH THEIR GREATEST COLLECTION SEASON AFTER SEASON. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG DESIGNERS JUST STARTING OUT AND HOPING TO MAKE IT IN THE INDUSTRY?
Pressure is good. Use it. Enjoy the ride and stay in your lane, your journey is the best journey.
