When I was asked to do Sienna Miller’s makeup I was psyched and jumped at it. I was always in awe of her simple beauty and cool girl status. She was attending the 2006 Met Ball as a special guest of Vogue editor-in-chief Anna wintour — which made me a little nervous. I knew the drill. I knew Anna would be paying super close attention to every detail and that the makeup could make or break the look.
I met her at her hotel room, which was the penthouse of a midtown hotel. The team around her all felt like friends, and everyone was super sweet and happy to meet me. I first met with her stylist, who showed me the coolest Burberry gold sequin dress and asked my opinion. At the time, Sienna had finished filming Edie, and wanted to channel her look for the gala. I thought she should have smoky, sexy eyes with her freckles showing through, a sheer pinky flushed cheek and lashes — lots and lot of lashes.
Whenever I work with a celebrity, especially for the first time, I alway keep handing the mirror to the to make sure they buy into the whole look. When she said she loved it I was so happy. (It doesn’t always go so smoothly. Trust me.) It’s rare to be in a situation where you don’t feel rushed, so we all ordered tea from room service and I asked for a quick pic and she started getting dressed.
She came out full-on movie star it-girl and her stylist paired her dress with black opaque tights. Honestly, it looked odd to me, but what did I know. The next day it was all the rage and her look made the cover of all the fashion magazines. I still love this look.
