Simply put, a life coach is exactly what the term sounds like: an expert trained to guide others through the process of making positive changes in their lives. If there is a gap between where someone is now and where they want to be, then there is room for life coaching. If a person is feeling “stuck” and can’t seem to get out of their own way or even identify what changes they need to make to feel happy and fulfilled, a life coach can help them to find the path they need to take, and then guide them along that path until they reach their goals. For example, old thought patterns and habits often are what hold people back; a life coach can help a person break free of the mindsets and habits that hinder them.
My goal as a life coach is to help my clients to become their best selves, fulfill their potential and purpose, and live inspired lives. I take a holistic approach that focuses on every aspect of a person’s life as it relates to setting goals and creating positive change. I start from the assumption that as individuals we have the capability of generating solutions. My role is to provide a supportive and discovery-based framework for effective strategies for change.
People often expect a coach to tell them what to do, but that is not what I offer. I skillfully prompt my clients to tell me what they want to do. It’s the synergy in our relationship that creates opportunity and change. As a Certified High Performance Life Coach, I steer clients to focus on specific areas: clarity (how clear they are about what they need or want to achieve in order to feel more purposeful and fulfilled): courage (how confident and bold they are showing up in the world); energy (whether they have the physical and mental stamina to perform their best); (how prone they are to distractions or poor habits that cause them fall off course, and how they might develop routines to stay on track); and influence (what they can do to better lead and inspire family, friends, colleagues, and others). In this way, I help them discover and hone the same types of beliefs, habits, and tools that the most successful people use.
If you are looking for a Life Coach, here are some recommendations:
Get a Referral.
Being referred from a trusted source such as a family member, a friend or a colleague is a great way to find the right coach for you.
Search Online.
You can also look online for a coach especially if you are looking for a coach with a specific expertise. For example, maybe you are looking for an expert coach who can help you lose weight or you want a dating coach. Some coaches cater to one area of focus.
Set up an Introductory Call or Meeting.
If you don’t know the life coach, an initial call or meeting helps you learn about the coach and how they work. It also gives them the opportunity to learn about you and the goals you want to accomplish.
