By now you know about the powerful effects of beauty foods on your health, skin, and overall glow. But the items in your pantry and fridge can also be applied directly to hair and skin for even more radiance. From masks to scrubs to moisturizers, here are my favorite kitchen beauty treatments.
Acne Fighters
Lemon works as a great astringent for oily skin. Just dip a cotton ball into fresh-squeezed lemon juice and apply to your T-zone or anywhere skin is clogged and oily. You can also use lemon juice as a spot treatment for pimples.
Body Scrubs
I personally love a deep, strong exfoliator for some of the rougher areas on my body, and my quest for this ended in my kitchen. While cleaning out my gadget drawer, I found an unused potato scrubber glove that actually worked wonders. It now lives in my shower and I use it regularly on my legs and feet. This is definitely not for everyone, but it shows how a little creativity is sometimes all that is needed when it comes to beauty.
Brown Sugar & Olive Oil: This gentle body scrub works to exfoliate and moisturize if you apply it to your body before a shower, then rinse off. Mix two parts olive oil with one part brown sugar. Your skin will be so hydrated you won’t have to apply moisturizer afterward.
Sea Salt, Lemon Juice & Olive Oil: For a more intense scrub, combine two parts olive oil with one part sea salt and one part lemon juice. The lemon acts as an astringent, while the sea salt provides a more vigorous scrub and the olive oil hydrates. Use before or during a shower to reveal fresh skin.
Lip Scrub
Honey with Brown Sugar: Mix two parts honey with one part brown sugar for a sweet and exfoliating lip scrub. Rub gently in a circular motion until sugar is dissolved. Wipe off any excess with a tissue, and follow with lip balm.
Makeup Removers
Olive Oil, Coconut Oil & Jojoba Oil: Pretty much any natural oil will work to effortlessly remove makeup plus add a hydrating boost to skin. Just apply oils to a cotton pad and sweep across face to lift off makeup.
Custom Oil Blends
I created my dream face oil for my brand more than ten years ago with vitamin E and sesame, sweet almond, olive, and jojoba oils, plus neroli, patchouli, lavender, and sandalwood for fragrance. I also use a lot of oils from my kitchen on my face and body. Try customizing your own. Pair any oils you love (olive, coconut, grapeseed, and avocado oils are all very hydrating), then mix with a few drops of essential oils for scent (my favorites are neroli and orange essence). Place in a pretty glass bottle and you have your own custom hydrating miracle oil.
Hair
Avocado, Olive or Coconut Oil Conditioner: All three of these will give your hair an intense boost of moisture. Olive oil is the most intense, followed by coconut oil. Avocado is lighter but still hydrating. Just shampoo your hair, squeeze out excess water, and coat your hair with the oil. Tie up your hair with an elastic and let the oil soak in for 15 minutes, then rinse it out. I recommend doing an oil treatment once a week. If you have oily hair or an oily scalp, coat only the ends.
Apple Cider Vinegar: Shampoos and conditioners can leave build up over time, leaving hair lifeless and flat. To bring your hair back to health, rinse with one cup of apple cider vinegar after shampooing. Rinse with water and then condition as usual. Do this when you feel your hair looking dull, then repeat once a month.
