My First Time: Four Seasons Punta Mita
Written by: Anjali Kumar
I used to travel a lot. Pre-pandemic, I was on a plane more often than not: heading to meetings, speaking at conferences, visiting family, traveling for fun… So much of my life was spent going places. Yet my wellness routine largely went out the window when I was on the road. Sure, I would pack healthy snacks for the flight, avoid alcohol in-flight (except that time I got bumped up to first class on a flight to Paris and they came around with champagne because it seemed rude to say no, amirite?), drink lots of water, etc. But once I got to my destination, keeping up with healthy habits became challenging.
So for our first big post-pandemic family holiday, I was intrigued when I heard about the wellness focus of the Four Seasons in Punta Mita. The prospect of soaking myself in tequila and tacos as our kid splashed around on the beach for a week was very appealing. After the past two years, I knew I needed a destination that made it easy for the whole family to make smart, healthy choices while on holiday.
My Four Seasons Punta Mita review
The resort is located in the private, ultra-luxurious 1,500-acre community of Punta Mita in the Riviera Nayarit, just 45 minutes from Puerto Vallarta. The beachfront property is set on 52 acres and boasts incredible surf and lush jungles (plus two golf courses, much to my husband’s delight). Just wandering through the property is relaxing enough. Throw in an infinity pool with a view of the beach below and the sea beyond? It is enough to lower your blood pressure right there and then.
For someone who writes a beauty and wellness column for this site, I am actually not big on massages. I don’t find them super relaxing, I get restless, and would rather do something where I can *see* results relatively quickly (facials, lasers, that kind of thing). But the team at Apuane Spa made me rethink my stance.
Apart from the standard spa features one might expect at a luxury hotel (state-of-the-art fitness facility, hydrotherapy areas, sauna, and steam room), the Apuane Spa celebrates the rich cultural heritage of pre-Hispanic Mexico using indigenous herbal remedies and curative ingredients. Intrigued by the healing potential of local ingredients and techniques, I tried the Punta Mita Tequila Stone and Hakali massages.
The Punta Mita Tequila Stone massage is considered a guest favorite, and I can see why. My incredible therapist, Itza Gallo, combined tequila and sage oil in this deep tissue massage using her hands, forearms, and hot stones to release muscle tension, stimulate circulation, and improve joint mobility.
The Hakali massage relies on antioxidant properties of the Hakali cactus and targets the lymphatic system through gentle stretches and slow, light-pressure massage. Warm cactus gel with sage cream draws out toxins and enhances the experience overall.
I was very relaxed after each of these treatments bookending my stay… and I might be a massage person now.
Leslie Durso, a vegan chef and wellness expert, began working with Four Seasons Punta Mita executive chef Jorge González in 2017. Her intention: to create the most plant-based friendly five-star resort in the world.
There are four al fresco restaurants on the property. Each offers a variety of delicious options, ensuring anyone with any dietary restrictions can enjoy thoughtfully prepared dishes throughout the property.
The team always uses whole, real ingredients and incorporates local flavors and techniques. They offer creative dishes with ingredients that still feel familiar: wild mushroom empanadas, wok-fried miso eggplant, corn ribs in a Mexican BBQ sauce, vegan churros, and gluten-free chocolate cake with chocolate avocado ganache and raspberries. My mouth is watering at the memories. We ate so well throughout our stay but never woke up regretting an overly indulgent meal from the night before. (That’s not something I can always say on holiday.)
I ended the trip feeling like I had achieved the holy grail: We all felt well and rested.
If you are looking for a luxurious, wellness-focused holiday, the Four Seasons Punta Mita might just be what the doctor ordered… with an optional splash of tequila.
