Girlfriend's Guide: 5 (Easy) Low-Sugar Cocktails

Written by: Robin Levine Shobin

I’ll admit it: I love to drink – alcohol that is. I live a healthy life. I work out regularly, stick to a stringent supplement routine, and drink tons of water. I also drink a HALO Sport everyday, whether I work out or not. Proper hydration is essential. That said, I still love a glass of red wine and a good cocktail.

I guess you could say alcohol is the only bad habit I can’t break. So I try my best to put alcohol into my body in the “healthiest” way I can. I know that is a bit of an oxymoron. And one thing I never, ever do is order cocktails in a bar. The hidden amounts of sugar in the form of simple syrup and other liquor additives can hit you with hundred calories. So, if you see me at a restaurant, I’ll be enjoying my glass of red wine or tequila neat.

“Occasionally sipping a delicious cocktail in the company of friends can be good for the soul, even if alcohol is not the best thing for your body,” says celebrity nutritionist Keri Glassman.

"However, when you do indulge, you don’t have to throw all of your other healthy habits out the window," she says. "As in, your drinks don’t need to be sugary carb bombs.”

Now, if you’re one of my lucky girlfriends, you know I love making cocktails at home! And despite being partial as the co-founder of HALO Sport, it actually is not only the cleanest hydration drink on the market, it makes an amazing healthy cocktail mixer. You’ve probably seen many “healthy” cocktail recipes with kombucha or coconut water, but HALO makes the ultimate healthy mixer because not only is it light and refreshing, but it also hydrates the body and replenishes the electrolytes lost while you drink.

So, while you should also be drinking water while you are drinking alcohol (the cardinal rule is one for one; meaning one glass of alcohol followed by one glass of water), mixing your drink with electrolytes can really help you out the next morning.

"Water is fantastic," explains HALO Chief Wellness Advisor and celebrity trainer Don Saladino. "But we also need a high-quality salt to help restore a lot of what the body has lost."

Here are a few of my favorites:

HALO ‘RITA

  • 1.25 oz Milagro Silver Tequila
  • 0.75 oz Cointreau
  • 3 oz HALO Sport Lime

If you are feeling up to it, put in a quick squeeze of fresh lime juice and garnish with a lime slice. Feeling super lazy? Keri Glassman of Nutritious Life made this recipe specially for me, but sometimes I just mix HALO Sport Lime flavor with Heradura Anejo. It’s quick, easy and delicious.

THE EASIEST AND HEALTHIEST SPICY HALO ‘RITA

  • 1.25 oz Ghost Tequila
  • 2 oz HALO Sport Lime

I was recently introduced to this made-for-spicy-margaritas tequila called Ghost Tequila. It’s spicy in a good way and most importantly, really easy. I can’t recommend it enough for making cocktails at home.

HALO BLOOD ORANGE PALOMA

  • 1.25 ounces tequila
  • HALO Sport Blood Orange
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • Club Soda

Want to go the extra mile? Add 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed orange juice and a lime to garnish.

For you gin and vodka lovers, try these recipes:

TOM COLLINS

  • 1.25 ounces gin
  • HALO Lemon
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • Soda Water
  • Sprig fresh mint

PINK LEMONDATE SPRITZ

  • 1.25 ounces vodka
  • HALO Pink Lemonade
  • Prosecco
  • Sprig fresh rosemary

Pro-tip: Drink a bottle of HALO Sport before bed after a night of drinking and you’ll wake up hangover free.
