5 Places to Go for Oysters Right Now

Written by: Alexandra Perron, Managing Editor

Hands down, summer is one of our favorite times to eat oysters. There’s just something about the season that spikes our craving. Plus, the tasty bivalves are low in calories (around 68 for a 3.5 ounce wild oyster), while being high in protein and other key nutrients. You’ll get over 100% RDI of zinc, copper, vitamin B12 and a good amount of omega-3 fatty acids, which are linked to improved heart and brain health. What’s not to love about that?

When it comes to oyster season, keep in mind that oysters spawn in the summer, when the water is warm, and this influences flavor and composition. Oysters are typically best when enjoyed out of cold water. And try to take it easy on the toppings and enjoy your first oyster “naked" and go from there.

Below are some of our favorite spots to shuck and slurp at. From Brooklyn to Napa, here’s where to make your next reservation:

Little Creek Oysters in Greenport, New York

If you want to shuck your own oysters, this is the place to go. (It’s also a Bobbi favorite!) This little outpost on the Peconic Bay offers a strong selection of oysters from the area plus a must-order spicy bloody mary.

Maison Premiere in Brooklyn, New York

Grab an expertly mixed cocktail and start slurping. Maison Premiere has over 20 oysters on the menu at any given time. And if you don’t know where to start, order the chef’s selection of 12 oysters.

Hog Island Oyster Co. in California

With locations in Napa, San Francisco and an oyster farm you can tour in Marshall, Hog Island Oyster is the place to go in Northern California. The selection of sustainable shellfish and warm atmosphere is hard to beat.

Grand Central Oyster Bar in New York City

A true New York institution, the 100-year-old Grand Central Oyster Bar is a favorite of locals, tourists, and commuters alike. The menu boasts over 30 oysters and a rotating daily selection of seafood.

Eventide Oyster Co. in Portland, Maine

With a variety of Maine oysters available, Eventide Oyster Co. takes their seafood seriously. There’s something on the menu for everyone, even your friends who don’t like oysters. Brown Butter Lobster Roll, anyone?
